Director of Accounting and Administration

The New York-New Jersey Trail Conference is seeking a versatile, highly organized Director of Accounting and Administration responsible for finances, human resources, customer service and managing our physical plant and business systems. With a total staff of 15 and numerous office volunteers, this is a key executive position for keeping our office running efficiently and effectively.

Responsibilities:

  1. Supervision of three staff and a part-time bookkeeper
  2. All financial transactions and record keeping including monthly financial report preparation, grant administration, budget and audit management
  3. Manage administrative operations and facility
  4. Manage all technological equipment including LAN
  5. Manage membership renewals, contributions, and publication sales fulfillment processes
  6. Human resources including payroll and benefits administration
  7. Implement and develop best practices and procedures

Qualifications:

  1. Accounting and/or full-charge booking experience (especially non-profit)
  2. Management of annual audit
  3. Experience with technology and business systems, particularly databases and other information reporting systems
  4. Excellent PC skills and proficiency with business applications including QuickBooks, Filemaker Pro, Microsoft Office
  5. Demonstrated ability to supervise staff and volunteers in a collaborative environment
  6. Experience in a publications business environment is desirable
  7. Driver’s license, vehicle and a willingness to work irregular hours and/or locations

Created in 1920, the Trail Conference now represents 100 member clubs and 10,000 individual hiking enthusiasts in the greater New York metropolitan region and outlying areas.  Since opening the original section of the Appalachian Trail in 1923, the trail network that we cooperatively manage has grown to 1,700 miles. Over a thousand Trail Conference volunteers contribute 40,000 hours to this and other conservation efforts annually. 

Our approximately $1M annual budget is supported through charitable giving, donated services and earned revenue. Compensation for this position is in the $50-60K range depending on experience, including full medical coverage, 403B retirement contributions and other benefits.
