July 4, 2008 HOLIDAY WEEKEND HIKER OUTREACH

East Hudson volunteers are holding a two day outreach event at the Breakneck Ridge trailhead and the Bull Hill (Mt. Taurus) trailhead, both on Route 9D North of Cold Spring, NY, on Friday July 4 and Saturday July 5, 2008.

These heavily traveled trails offer a great opportunity to generate awareness about responsible hiking, volunteering and trail stewardship.

We are going to have a station at each trailhead to talk to people, sell East Hudson Maps, and offer NY-NJ Trail Conference membership information.

We need extra hands! If you would like to join us, and are willing to commit to a two or three-hour slot on Friday, July 4th or Saturday, July 5th, between 9 am and 3 pm, please contact:

Josie Gray, Chair of East Hudson Committee, email: jospira72@gmail.com

Appalachian Trail Outreach Projects

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy sponsors an Outreach Grants program that the local AT management committees have taken advantage of for several projects.

  • Ruta Apalache - a Spanish language brochure on the AT in Harriman
  • Approach It Right (AIR) - Leave No Trace project sponsor by NJ AT committee
  • Harriman Nature Walks at the Tiorati Cicle Picnic Area (see above)

Service Projects

The Trail Conference has many opportunities available for outside groups to join with us as partners in trail related service projects. We regularly work with individual scouts working on their Eagle Award or Gold Award. Church groups, business and other groups have also worked on specific projects. Contact us at info@nynjtc.org with either specific ideas  of projects or a desire to fill one of our opportunities. We also have small grants available to youth groups to use on projects.

Example projects:

  • Telephone Pioneer's Shelter on AT
  • Trail relocation on Candlewood Hill
  • Tent platforms at Wiley Shelter
  • Bridges on AT
  • Planting trees
  • New privy at RPH lean-to
  • Waterbars on Wilkinson Trail
  • Photo book of views from trails for monitoring what is visible over long time periods.
