Map Folding

USGS topographic maps are getting more expensive, even as their quality decreases.
Here's a folding method (from a U.S. Army book on map reading) that helps preserve
them by making them easier to handle in the outdoors: You can see any part of the map
by unfolding no more than two creases. Try it with a sheet of paper first:

1. Fold the map in half, bottom to top, with the printed side
    _outward_ ("x" = upper-right title block).

| / /
|/_____________/

2. Fold left-to-right, such that the upper-right title is inside.

3. Fold outer half of each "book leaf" backward (title is now outside).

Magnetic Declination

Here is the FAQ: http://www.cam.org/~gouletc/decl_faq.html. But be aware that the New York-New Jersey area is loaded with iron mines which locally make a compass almost useless. It is also worth noting that you will be off by about 90 feet per mile for each degree that you wrong. In other words ignoring the difference between magnetic north and true north is a serious error. You will be off by about 1000 feet, e.g the wrong side of hill. The declination changes with time. Look at the date of the declination information on any USGS topo and be aware that it could be off by a few degrees if it is not a recent map. Some topos have not been updated in 20 years.
