RD Relo 10/9/2004

This project has been completed with the RD blazes now continuing north jointly with the AT beyond Arden Valley Rd for 3/4 mi.,then turning east at Youman Flats Rd., crossing 7 Lakes Drive and looping around Tiorati  Plateau Campground utilizing out wood roads, rejoining the old route just before it starts up Goshen Mt. All the old blazes  have been obscured with camouflage paint. This move eliminates a hazardous 3/4 mile road walk.

Stillman Trail (Storm King/Black Rock)

See West Hudson Trails 4th edition 2006

The Stillman Trail is being relocated considerably to use the underpass under Rt 9W instead of crossing it (very dangerous - don't even think about doing the old route).

Revision to Map#3,Southern Harriman,Bear Mtn.Trails

In an attempt to eliminate redundant trail work and impractical environmental erosion, the western trail head of the HTS Trail has been relocated from 7 Lakes Drive to the junction of the HTS (orange) and TMI (Red /White) Trails beside the Stoney Creek

Todd Trail December 2003

The Todd Trail at its southern end in Ramapo Mountain State Forest has been relocated slightly to avoid a very wet section. It now follows the stream to the MacEvoy Trail intersection. Less than 0.1 mile of trail is affected.

Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail errata

Oops! In the September/October issue, we showed erroneously the new relocation route of the eastern end of the Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail. See the map excerpt below for the correct route of the trail. Also, please note that the R-D proceeds west jointly with the Timp-Torne Trail for .2 mile, not .02 as stated in the last issue.

White Bar Trail relocation: Harriman-Bear Mountain

A short, 1/3 mile section of the White Bar Trail has been relocated to eliminate a dangerous roadwalk to and from the parking area on Route 106. (See the Trail Conference's Harriman-Bear Mountain Trails map #3, grid B4.)

The trailheads for the White Bar remain unchanged. This relocation proceeds east from Island Pond Road, to cross Route 106 directly to the middle of the parking area on the south side of road, then climbs Carr Mountain to rejoin the White Bar.

Hillburn-Torne-Sebago 4/26/99

The Hillburn-Torne-Sebago (HTS) trail is has a color change. The trail is now been re-marked from white to orange to avoid confusion at junctions with other white trails. See Harriman Trails map #3, grids B-5 & B-6.

Pecoy Notch Trail (Catskills)

We are pleased to report that the northern half of the Pecoy Notch Trail has been re-routed onto state owned land and the Dept. of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has opened a new parking lot for hikers. The new lot is off Elka Park/Dale Road just west of the junction with Wase Road (Catskill Trails Map #41, Grid 4-N/O) and includes a trailhead register and bulletin board. The Pecoy Notch Trail now starts from this parking area. The old trailhead on Wase Road, which had no parking, has been closed. The trail was scouted and constructed jointly by the DEC and volunteers of the Trail Conference. Our efforts were led by Catskill Trails Chair Peter Senterman assisted by his son Doug and supervisors Bruce Warden, Jim Daley and Cal Johnson who gave about 20 person/days of their time. DEC assistance was provided by a team that included Ranger Rick Dearstyne, Mike Carlson, Paul Trotta and Tom Folts.

Former TC Vice President and Catskill Trails Chair Stella Green hiked the new section in mid-September, shortly after it's completion. She reports that "this is a wonderful addition to the trail system. The new route goes past a fascinating old slate quarry and then on to two bog areas reminiscent of the Maine woods. There is even a fine view up the notch to Sugarloaf and Twin Mountains. We are most appreciative to all those who worked so hard to get this open to the public."

The DEC acquired the 611 acre "DeVico" parcel at the upper section of Mink Hollow (Map #41, Grid N-4) which includes two springs and about a mile of the Devil's Path. This is a critical addition to the Indian Head Wilderness Area and our thanks go out to all those involved. A branch trail is planned from the new Pecoy Notch section to Mink Hollow Road (traveling across this new acquisition).

Mink Hollow Trail (Catskills) - June 6, 1998

The new Mink Hollow trail mentioned at the end of the Pecoy Notch trail description above was officially opened on Jun 6, 1998. Markers are yellow from the Roaring Kill parking area (approx 12 cars) to the new signed trail junction (approx 0.3 mi). From that point, both the Pecoy Notch and Mink Hollow trails are marked blue. I believe the Mink Hollow trail is a little under 2.5 mi. Easy grades. A nice loop over Sugerloaf is now possible.

Summer 97 - Breakneck Ridge Trail

There is a short relocation very near the beginning of the trail on Rt 9D. Instead of going up the telephone line, it bears right out to a view and then left over the tunnel to begin the steep climb. Thanks to an Americorp crew lead by Kevin McLachlin and a number of Trail Conference volunteers.

October 97 - Washburn Trail

The trail has been relocated away from the eroded quarry rim. It now turns right to climb the ridge with new views to the south before rejoining the old trail to cross above the quarry. Thank to the East Hudson Trail Crew.
